One of the biggest questions asked when dealing with God is, “How can there be such a loving God and still be so much evil and suffering in the world?” This, I believe is a very legitimate question to ask. We all face troubles throughout our lives and many struggle with the idea of a loving God who still allows suffering in the world.
Randy Alcorn has given us an excellent book that deals with this subject. He has dealt with seemingly every aspect of God and suffering and helps us to understand how these two can exist together. He deals with topics such as, “Understanding the Problem of Evil and Suffering,” “Evil and Suffering in the Great Drama of Christ’s Redemptive Work,” and “Evil and Suffering Used for God’s Glory.” These are only three of the eleven different sections in Alcorn’s book.
This is not a book that can only be read and understood by someone with a graduate degree in Theology. Although it does get deep at times, he writes it in a way that anyone who is dealing with this problem can read and understand his thoughts. He gives us passages of scripture that will help us to better understand why we have this pain and suffering in the world. It is not just what he things, it is what the Bible has to say also.
It also would not have to be read chapter by chapter. This book will make a great resource to go directly to the chapter dealing with the issue or discussion at hand and see what Alcorn has to say. It will make an excellent reference book in any library.
If you have every wondered how God and evil can exist together in the same world, then you should give this book a try. It is a rather large book. You will not finish it in a day, but it will be well worth the time that you put into it.
One of my favorite quotes from this book is when he says, “Many of us make Satan too big and God too small.” There are many other lines in my copy of this book that have been underlined and I am beginning a series of lessons with our high school group at church based from this book.
